bike, hike, kayak, cook, camp, and just breathe

Hi, Chris here. What is this about? I'm an illustrator and book designer and I sit in the campground and make books... mostly children's books.
Sometimes, I write, illustrate, and publish my own books. Most often though, I help other first-time authors put together their children's books.
Many of my authors are 70, 80, or even 90-years young. Who are they?
Usually, I work with a grandmother or great-grandmother who has a bucket-list dream to write and publish. Also, she has a very special grandchild for whom she wants to give something of her life's story.
So it is common that the catalyst for a publishing project is centered around a grandchild. I help one special grandma put together one special book to share with one special grandchild.
It's a true collaborative project with daily reviews and discussions. Comments and feedback are incorporated into the design.
Often, my authors are not exactly writers. They are regular people who have had an experience, a relationship, a memory, a feeling, a story. They want to see it carried forward. And the vehicle? Something special for their grandkid... a beautifully-crafted children's book.
I call it 'personal publishing' because the considerations for such a book are entirely personal, separate from the marketplace (in which considerations can be quite extensive).
In personal publishing, a children's book can often be a sort of thank-you gift to a child (and perhaps the author's own child-within). It's about how a child has become a special part of someone's life. And as a celebration-of-life type of book, it can be quite powerful.
It goes without saying... personal publishing is not the exclusive domain of grandmas... it equally applies to grandfathers, and other family.
But Will It Sell?
A children's book will sell only when kids, parents, teachers, and many others in the literary community discover the book, read it, and are transformed by the unique and well-crafted message as well as the excellent storytelling presentation that embraces the book form as art.
When people talk about the power of a book, it will spread ...and sell.
It takes time to produce a beautiful children's book. And there must be a willingness to commit heart and soul to the project. My standard 32-page picture book goes from start to finish in 90 days. The complete publishing package is $1,800 ($20 per day). The work I do is definitely a labor of love.
